N.Y. Zombies 2 Review: If New York Survived Sandy, Zombies Are Easy Peasy!

From the second that you launch the game, you notice the gritty art style that surrounds the whole game.

“The world you once knew is gone. The bustling streets of New York are now quiet, except for the occasional cry for help. Your friends, your family, your neighbors and coworkers are all dead. The end of the world has come… and it seems strangely familiar.”

Presentation

How do the actual gameplay graphics stack up? They’re just as good: zombies look gory and er….deadly. To those that played the original game, you’ll be glad to hear that the game has kept the art style of the original, and improved on it. Unfortunately, there are some hiccups.

For one, the survivors aren’t very distinguishable from the zombies. The other is when the enemies in the corners would make it look like they walk through parts of the wall. Summed up, I would say presentation isn’t fantastic, but it isn’t terrible.

Controls

One thing that doesn’t shine in N.Y. Zombies 2 are the controls. The biggest gripe I have with the game is that the developers chose tap to shoot. This becomes evident when you try to look around. Another problem is that no matter how far you move the thumbstick, your character always moves at a very slow and chunky speed. Everything about the controls, whether it be controls or sensitivity, needs a touchup.

Gameplay

Among the level, there are a lot of level objectives. Sometimes you’ll be finding survivors, while some other times you’ll be killing enemies. The game suffers from spotty collision detection from time, so you’ll want to make a good first impression: with a gun.  In between levels, you have a chance to upgrade your weapons, characters, and even buy new weapons.

When you upgrade your character, it can affect one out of three abilities: melee, ranged, and health. You can use your skill points in all three tress. It’s important in the beginning however that you pick well in the beginning. Lastly, there is a multiplayer element that feels like CoD: Zombies, allowing up to three friends to join you.

Conclusion

It pains me to say this, but this is one of those examples when the sequel to the game doesn’t quite live up to the original. By making N.Y. Zombies 2 more like an FPS, it brought some issues that are hard to ignore. Add up the difficult controls, spotty collision detection, and it’s just not very good.
